Connecting Urban and Rural - Final report of the Sustainable Urban Fringes (SURF) Project
This Report Highlights recommendations for the Urban Edge EU project findings published in Connecting Urban & Rural Report
This European project has published its findings after 3 years of research informed by practical projects that demonstrate how the urban fringe can make a real contribution to sustainable development in our city regions.
The Sustainable Urban Rural Fringe findings highlight the need for specific policy to address urban fringe development and management; acknowledging the positive economic, social and environmental potential of these areas where urban meets rural.
The “Connecting Urban and Rural” report sets out a series of local, regional and European policy recommendations that seek to make positive changes to the urban fringe, recognising how they can add value to the quality of life in urban and rural areas.
The report examines governance approaches and highlights city region perspectives and examples that have been effective in establishing projects.
Bradford Metropolitan District Council, Airedale Partnership is one of 13 project partners from 5 countries who worked together, exchanging knowledge on the effective management and development of the urban fringe and the processes and practices used. This information has been used to develop the project findings.
The SURF project has developed a Toolkit for Urban Fringe Management, which is due for publication in the coming weeks. This document brings together effective tools used by the SURF project partners and aims to inspire others to develop sustainable projects in urban fringe areas.
The Sustainable Urban Fringes (SURF) Project is part of the Interreg IVB North Sea Region Programme and is partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
